A backup piece is a physical file that belongs to a logical structure which is called the backup set.
Backup pieces might(?) be stored in the fast recovery area.

Name of a backup piece

The name of a backup piece must be unique within a media management catalog.
The name of a backup piece is determined by the format string that was used in either of the following commands:
The channel format specifier %p is replaced with the backup piece number.

Maximum size

The maximum size of a backup piece is controlled by the maxpiecesize parameter.
