Windows Settings: Choose default apps by file type

Choose default apps by file type allows to associate a file type (file extension) with an application (program executable).
The Choose default apps by file type can be reached via the Default apps settings page and then clicking on the Choose default apps by file type link. On the command line, the Default apps setting page can be reached with
C:\> start ms-settings:defaultapps
Apparently, these default settings are stored in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
