Default optins and settings

Normal.dotm is the default Word template that is automatically opened when Word is started. This template stores the default fonts, styles, margins, spacing for new Word documents.

Show/hide paragraph markers

Keyboard shortcut ctrl+* (* usually is shift+8). The option Paragraph marks (file->options->display) must be turned off - otherwise, the paragraph markers are always shown.

Show rulers

The rulers of a document are shown by going the View tab on the Ribbon and then ticking Ruler:

Using the Menu:
  • English: Menu insert -> Drop down quick parts -> field
  • Deutsch: Menu Einfügen -> Drop down Schnellbausteine -> Feld
With keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+F9

Inserting fields:
  • Empty: Ctrl+F9
  • Date: Alt+Shift+D
Update selected fields: F9
Switch between selected / all fields' code and result: Shift+F9 / Alt+F9
Jump to next/previous field: F11 / Shift+F11
Lock/unlock a field: Ctrl+F11 / Ctrl+Shift+F11
Note: Alt+F11 has nothing to do with fields, it opens the Visual Basic for Applications Editor

Change color of page (or paper)

The color of the page can be changed by going to the Design tab and then choosing Page Color:

Misc

After translating a Word document with DeepL, the translated Document was protected from editing (Ribbon Review, button Restrict Editing). It turned out, that a password was needed to allow editing again. I was able to make the document editable by exporting it as *.rtf file, then removing {\*\passwordhash …} from the *.rtf file and opening this *.rtf file in word again.
