var/log is the directory under which log files are typically stored.

Files that might be found under /var/log include

`boot.log`
`btmp`	records bad login attempts.
`dmesg`
`dpkg.log`
`faillog`	records failed login attempts.
`kern.log`
`lastlog`	records when each user last logged in.
`messages`
`shiny-server.log`
`syslog`
`utmp`
`wtmp`	records all logins and logouts

Historically, /var/log was /usr/adm and later /var/adm which explains why the group-owner of some files under /var/log is adm.
